Solubility

X-Gal is not soluble in water. A stock solution can be prepared by dissolving X-Gal in DMF (Dimethyl formamide) to a concentration of 20-50 mg/ml. Use a glass or polypropylene container. To prevent damage by light, store the solution wrapped in aluminum foil or in a dark bottle at -20°C.

Applications

X-Gal (5-Bromo-4-Chloro-3-Indolyl-β- D- Galactoside) is a histochemical substrate for β-galactosidase. Bacteria or phages harboring β-galactosidase activity will appear blue when grown on plates containing X-Gal.
